Senior Backend Engineer (PHP).

About the role

What you'll do

• Own backend services end to end — design, build, test, ship and run them in production.
• Work across predev.'s client projects: web platforms, mobile-app backends, admin panels and integrations.
• Design and version REST APIs consumed by web dashboards and iOS/Android apps.
• Design MySQL schemas, write safe migrations on live data, and find and fix slow queries.
• Run queues, scheduled jobs and background processing reliably.
• Integrate third-party services: payment gateways, SMS and email providers, push notifications, cloud storage and external APIs.
• Ship through Docker and CI/CD pipelines, watch production, and lead the fix when something breaks.
• Modernise legacy PHP code into well-tested Laravel services without disrupting users.
• Help scope new projects: estimate the work, choose the architecture and flag risks early.
• Review code, mentor mid-level engineers, and write the documentation the next engineer needs.

What you need

• 5+ years building and running PHP backend systems in production.
• 4+ years of Laravel on modern PHP (8.2+).
• Strong MySQL: indexing, reading query plans, and migrating schemas on live data.
• REST API design and authentication with Sanctum, Passport or JWT.
• Queues, jobs and Redis in production.
• Automated testing (PHPUnit or Pest) as a normal part of your work.
• Docker for local development and deployment.
• Git and a pull-request review culture.
• Comfortable moving between projects and codebases you did not write.
• Clear written English for specs, pull requests and incident notes.

Nice to have

• Other PHP frameworks (Symfony, Yii2, CodeIgniter) or a legacy-PHP migration.
• Filament or Livewire.
• Payment-gateway integrations.
• AWS or Google Cloud, and Linux server administration.
• Monitoring and observability tools such as Sentry or Datadog.
• Meilisearch or Elasticsearch.
• Role-based access control (spatie/laravel-permission).
• Arabic / RTL content; Arabic language.
